Jacob came to the east and met Rachel at a well. He helped her give water to the sheep, and Rachel ran to tell her father Laban. Laban welcomed Jacob warmly into his home. Jacob agreed to serve Laban for seven years for Rachel, and because he loved her, those years seemed like only a few days. After seven years, Laban held a wedding celebration, but he deceived Jacob and arranged for Leah to be the bride. The next morning Jacob learned he had been deceived and asked Laban why he had done this. Laban said that according to their custom the older sister should marry first. Jacob agreed to serve seven more years so Rachel could also become his wife. The family story became complicated, but God saw Leah when she felt unloved and continued working in this household.
