Sarah died in Hebron in the land of Canaan when she was one hundred and twenty-seven years old. Abraham grieved for her, then rose to ask the local Hittites to sell him a place where Sarah could be buried with respect. The Hittites respected Abraham and were willing to let him choose a place, but Abraham insisted on paying a fair price. In front of the people, he bought the cave of Machpelah and the surrounding field from Ephron for four hundred shekels of silver. In this way, Machpelah became Abrahamโs legally owned property in the promised land and a family burial place. In his sadness, Abraham remembered Sarah with love, treated others with courtesy and honesty, and continued trusting Godโs promises for his family.
