The cunning serpent tempted Eve to doubt God's word, telling her that if she ate the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, she would not die, but would become like God. Eve saw that the fruit was pleasing to the eye and good to eat, so she picked it and ate it, and also gave some to Adam. Their eyes were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they covered themselves with fig leaves. When God came into the garden, they hid because of their shame. After questioning them, God pronounced punishment on the serpent, the woman, and the man, but also made garments of skin for them to wear, and promised that the offspring of the woman would defeat the serpent. Finally, Adam and Eve were driven out of the Garden of Eden.
